On departure the first few hundred metres are the part that changes most with the hour. By day the lanes between the hotel and Atatürk Bulvarı fill with delivery vans and parked cars; at four or five in the morning they are empty and the avenue is reached within a minute or two. After that the car turns west and follows the coast back through Konaklı and Avsallar, then past Manavgat, Serik and Aksu. The 126 km to the terminal take about 105 minutes, longer at the height of the season.

A back-street address has its own small routine on the last morning. The car pulls up at the entrance or, if a van has the lane blocked, at the nearest corner, and the driver comes to find you instead of waiting out of sight. On an early departure the dawn call to prayer from the mosque round the corner often comes before the car does, which makes a reliable second alarm. Settle the bill the evening before, so that only the keys are left to hand over.

• To set the pickup hour, add your airline's check-in time to the 105 minutes of driving, then keep a spare quarter of an hour in July and August.
• Spending the last afternoon at the aquapark? Leave the cases at reception and keep the pickup at the hotel rather than at the park gate.
