Heading home, the drive runs in reverse and its slow part comes first: the hotel is on the far side of Alanya from Antalya, so the departure begins with the run west through Tosmur, Oba and the whole length of the town before the open coast. Before dawn that costs next to nothing. From mid-morning to evening in season, with town buses and beach traffic on the boulevard, it needs a margin of its own, and the 133 km that usually take about 110 minutes stretch with it.

A resort on the sand invites one more swim, and an evening flight leaves time for it. Agree with reception where the luggage goes after checkout, keep a change of clothes out of the suitcase, and book the car for when you are showered rather than for the checkout hour. With an early flight, count backwards from departure: the airline's check-in window, roughly 110 minutes of road and the town crossing put the pickup at an hour when Kestel is still dark.

• Ask for the pickup at the main building's entrance; with a residential block also on the grounds, it saves the driver guessing which door is yours.
• If anyone wants a last look at Alanya, a short stop in town on the way to the airport can be arranged when you book, since the route passes through the centre anyway.
• In high season the minutes go in two places, the crossing of Alanya and the Manavgat junctions, so build the margin around those rather than the open highway.
