For families in a Side hotel, the Land of Legends is usually the day the children have counted down to since the first evening of the holiday: a theme park and a water park on one site at Kadriye, right beside Belek, with a themed street between them that fills up once it gets dark. It is not a place to drop into for an hour. A family sets off in the morning with swimwear, sun cream and a bag of spare clothes, and comes back in the evening with a heavier bag, wet towels and at least one child asleep before the car reaches the highway. A private car fits that day, because it leaves when you are ready, not when a tour coach timetable says so.

The leg is 48 km and takes about 45 minutes. The car leaves Side by the access road, joins the D400 and turns west, keeping inland of the coastal villages: the turnings for Evrenseki, Çolaklı and Gündoğdu peel off to the left, towards the beaches. Further on, the highway crosses the Köprüçay beside the turning for Aspendos, runs past Serik and then leaves the main road for Kadriye and the park. Getting there is the easy half. The evening show decides the return: when it ends, families, coaches and taxis all try to get out through the same gate at the same moment, and the first stretch away from the park crawls until the crowd thins.

• When booking, say how old each child is, so the right car seats or boosters are already fitted when the driver pulls up at your hotel.
• Arrange the evening pickup together with the morning ride, and pick a meeting point a few minutes' walk from the main entrance, where coaches and taxis bunch up after the show.
• Bring a plastic bag or a waterproof sack for wet swimwear and towels, and hold back a set of dry clothes for everyone for the ride home, when children tend to nod off.
• If the youngest still rides in a pushchair, mention it at booking: a folding buggy, a cool bag and the spare clothes together take up a fair share of the boot.
