Titreyengöl is a resort built around a small lake a short way back from the beach, near where the Manavgat river reaches the sea, and many of its hotels are so self-contained that a week can pass without anyone walking out of the gate. An evening in Side is the usual way to break that. The old town sits on its own little peninsula, and the plan barely changes from one family to the next: wander the lanes as the shops reopen after the heat, reach the Temple of Apollo on the point before the sun drops into the sea, then sit down to dinner at one of the restaurants around the harbour. None of it finishes early, which is why the ride back deserves more thought than the ride in.

9 km, about 15 minutes. The car heads west through Sorgun and comes into Side from the north. There the road stops being a road for cars: the old town is closed to vehicles, so you are set down at the car park beside the bus station at its entrance, and the rest is on foot, much of it over old stone paving. That is the detail a family should build the evening around. A pushchair copes, but the walk back to the car at eleven at night with a sleeping child on your shoulder is longer than it looked at six. A return pickup can be arranged when you book; fix the meeting point and the hour then, rather than hunting for each other in the evening crowd.

• Book the return pickup together with the ride in and set it a little later than feels necessary, because dinner on the harbour rarely ends when it was meant to.
• Agree to meet at that car park by the bus station, where the car-free zone begins, since the car cannot drive into the old town to look for you.
• Travelling with small children, mention the pushchair when booking so there is room for it in the boot alongside everything else.
• To catch the sunset at the Temple of Apollo, leave the hotel in good time: the drop-off is at the landward end of the old town and the temple stands at the very tip.
