Kızılağaç sits on the Alanya side of Manavgat, and its beach hotels are built for staying put: pool, buffet, a long strip of sand and very little within walking distance once it is dark. Side is the evening the hotel cannot provide. People come in for the harbour and its fish restaurants, the lanes of shops between the Roman theatre and the water, and the columns of the Temple of Apollo at the tip of the peninsula, where the light lasts longest. The shoppers among them have something else in mind first: a short stop in Manavgat on the way, for a pharmacy, a supermarket that is not the hotel shop, or a charger to replace the one left at home.

The leg is 19 km and about 25 minutes, and it is not the coast road the western villages use. From the hotel strip the car takes the short access road to the D400 and heads west on the highway, with the turnings for Titreyengöl and Sorgun peeling off to the left towards the sea. Then comes Manavgat itself: town traffic, the bridge over the river and, on the far bank, the junction for Side. The last stretch runs south to the car park by the bus station at the entrance to the old town, which is closed to cars.

• Settle the return when you book the ride in: a car for the late trip back through Manavgat is simple to arrange in advance, and nobody wants to be hunting for one on the street at midnight.
• If you want a shopping stop in Manavgat, mention it when booking along with a rough idea of how long it will take, since any waiting time is agreed beforehand.
• Agree on one meeting point for the way back, such as the car park by the bus station where the car stops, because the old town's lanes all look alike after dark.
• For sunset at the Temple of Apollo, leave earlier than the distance suggests: on summer evenings the town traffic through Manavgat can hold everything up.
