Belek is three-quarters of an hour down the coast road and a different kind of holiday altogether: golf courses, riding centres and pine forest where Side has ruins, a harbour and a bazaar. Almost everyone travelling this way has something waiting at the other end: a round booked on one of the courses, a spa or clinic appointment, a wedding or a company event at a resort, or a hotel change halfway through the holiday — a week in the old town, then a week behind a gate with the clubs in the boot.

The transfer from Side to Belek is 45 km and about 45 minutes. Which junction the car uses depends on where your hotel sits along the Side strip; after that it is the D400 westbound across the Serik plain, flat the whole way, and what slows it is farm traffic rather than bends — tractors pulling trailers off the field roads, lorries loading at the packing sheds when the cotton or the pomegranates are coming in. The turn for Belek arrives at the far side of the plain and the character changes at once: the highway noise stops, the road runs into the pine belt, and what closes the journey is a resort approach with a barrier, a guard and a long drive up to the doors.

• Say when you book if you are carrying golf clubs — a full bag takes the boot space of a large suitcase, and two bags need a bigger car.
• Belek's resorts sit at the end of long private driveways with a barrier and a security check, so give the exact resort name rather than just Belek.
• Give the Side pickup as the hotel reception rather than the beach entrance: the service roads behind the strip are narrow and a full-size car cannot turn round at the sea end.
• Leave a margin for a morning tee time or treatment booking: the D400 around Serik is at its slowest between breakfast and midday in summer.
