Going back, the first stretch is the slowest one: out of Kumköy's streets onto the Side road and up to the D400 junction, a run that drags in late morning, when tour coaches and shuttle minibuses collect guests from one hotel after another. Before six it is quiet, and the car is on the highway within minutes. After the junction the drive west is dual carriageway past Serik and the Belek turnings, and outside the busiest summer weekends the 55 minutes for the 62 km hold comfortably.

If the flight is early, settle the bill and hand back the room cards the evening before, so leaving is a matter of minutes at the front entrance, where the driver will be at the agreed hour. A fortnight within reach of Side's shops also changes what goes home: two suitcases often return as two suitcases plus a carrier bag of souvenirs, a rolled rug or a box of Turkish delight. Count the pieces on the last evening and tell us if the total has grown, so the car is chosen to fit.

• Give the flight number when you book the departure; the pickup hour is worked out from it and confirmed to you in advance.
• Leaving straight after a last swim means the walk back from the beach and a shower first, so set the pickup with that half hour in mind.
• If you move to another hotel or a flat in Side for the final night, give that address at booking instead of the Alegria.
