The run back east is usually the practical half of a split holiday. Flights home leave from Antalya, not from anywhere near Kaş, and rather than lose a day at the airport most people book their last nights on the Side strip: a pool, a buffet, a beach you walk onto, ancient columns to look at after dinner. Others arrive in Kaş by sea — a gulet cruise that ends at the quay, a dive week that finishes on a Saturday — and simply need to be at the other end of the province by evening. Children who have had a fortnight of pebble coves and boat ladders vote for sand.

Leaving Kaş the road climbs at once, winding up away from the harbour and crossing the high, thinly settled ground behind Demre before it finds the sea again: the hardest part of the 255 km comes first, while everyone is still fresh. Then the coastal plain — Demre's greenhouses, the orange groves at Finike, Kumluca — and after it the cliff-and-tunnel section past Tekirova and Kemer. Antalya's ring road follows, and from there the run east through Serik and Manavgat into Side is flat and quick. About 3 hours 20 minutes, plus the stop.

• Many Kaş addresses sit on stepped lanes above the harbour where no car can reach the door, so agree a pickup point the vehicle can actually stand at.
• An early start gets the upland section done before mid-morning and keeps you clear of Antalya's ring road at the end of the working day.
• There is nothing on the road between Kaş and Demre, so the break is taken once you are down on the coast at Finike or Kumluca.
• Give the Side district — Kumköy, Çolaklı, Sorgun, Titreyengöl or the peninsula itself — because the strip is long and the last turning depends on it.
