Eastbound the passengers are different. A large share have spent two or three nights in the city — Kaleiçi, Lara or Konyaaltı — and are now moving to an all-inclusive at Side for the beach half of the trip, luggage and all. Others arrive at Antalya's long-distance bus terminal off an overnight coach from Cappadocia, Pamukkale or İstanbul, where nothing runs directly to the hotel roads at Side. And a steady number are going home the other way round: residents and long-stay visitors returning east after a hospital appointment, a consulate errand or a day of city shopping.

The Antalya to Side transfer works its way out of the city first — boulevards, lights, the eastern exits — and only then picks up the D400 proper. Past Lara and the Aksu junction the plain opens out: cotton, greenhouses, orange groves, with the Taurus ridge on the left for the rest of the way. After the Belek turning and the Serik stretch the road crosses the Manavgat plain, then leaves the highway and drops south towards the sea at the Side junctions, where the last few kilometres narrow into the hotel road. Count on 75 km and around 65 minutes; late afternoon, the city end is the slow part.

• City pickups are a hotel forecourt or a street address rather than a resort gate — give the district with the street, and expect the car to wait on the near side of a one-way boulevard.
• Off an overnight bus, agree the pickup point at the terminal when you book; the driver waits there with a name sign rather than circling the stands.
• Leaving the city between five and seven in the evening runs straight into the outbound rush; an hour either side is noticeably calmer.
• If the city days included the shopping centres, say so when you book — extra bags on top of the suitcases decide which vehicle goes out.
