The way out is short at the start: a few town streets to the Side road, up to the junction with the D400, then west. Sitting on the inland side of town helps on summer mornings, because the car does not have to work its way past the old-town car parks and the coaches unloading near the ruins. Before dawn the whole stretch to the highway takes only a few minutes; from mid-morning the Side road fills with hotel shuttles and day-trippers, though most of them are heading towards the sea, in the opposite lane.

From the junction the D400 runs west past Serik and Aksu to the terminals, and on an ordinary day the 67 km take about 60 minutes. Settle the room bill the evening before, since front desks are thinly staffed in the small hours and nothing should hold you up when the car pulls in. Tell us the flight number and the number of cases when you book; a town hotel's street can be narrow, and knowing the luggage in advance lets us send a car that fits both the bags and the kerb.

• Work the pickup hour back from the flight: 60 minutes on the road, the airline's check-in window, and a little spare for the Side junction in season.
