Two-centre holidays on this coast usually run in this direction: a week in Side for the sand and the ruins, then a move west to the other kind of Turkish shore. Kemer has what Side has not got — a wall of mountain standing directly behind the beach, pine forest instead of farmland, a yacht harbour with day boats leaving for the coves, canyon walks twenty minutes from the hotel and shingle instead of sand. Divers change base for the reefs off Tekirova, walkers come for the Lycian Way, and a good number of passengers are simply joining friends or family booked in at the other end of the bay.

The first 65 km are the flat part: out onto the D400 and west past the Belek turning, Serik and the bridge over the Köprüçay, the Aspendos junction, Aksu and the airport exits, dual carriageway all the way between greenhouses and cotton fields. Antalya is crossed on the ring road, and that is where a summer afternoon costs you time. Past Konyaaltı the drive changes completely: the mountains come down to the water, the road is carried across their face on a shelf blasted out of the rock, and only the last few kilometres run at sea level, through Beldibi and Göynük. Allow about 1 hour 35 minutes for the 110 km.

• The winding part of this route comes at the end, after an hour of straight road, which catches people out — anyone prone to travel sickness is better in a front seat from the start.
• Kemer as an address covers some thirty kilometres of coast, so give the village with the hotel name: Beldibi and Göynük come before the town, Kiriş, Çamyuva and Tekirova well after it.
• The route passes Antalya at roughly the two-thirds mark, so if you want an hour in the old town or at the museum on the way, agree it when you book rather than on the road.
• A mid-holiday move means every case travels at once, plus whatever you bought in Side; say how many bags there are so the vehicle sent has room for them.
