Hisarönü and Ovacık sit on the high ground behind Ölüdeniz, two villages that have grown into each other along a single road, and between them they hold a large share of the apartments, small hotels and rented villas on this stretch of coast. The lagoon and the beach are down the hill. The restaurants, bars and music are on the main strip itself, which wakes up after dark and stays loud long past midnight. The people booking this ride are families with a fortnight in a self-catering flat, groups of friends who picked the place for the nights out, and walkers who would rather sleep where the air is a little cooler. Plenty of them land late and reach the strip just as it is at its busiest.

The 62 km take about 55 minutes. From the terminal the car heads east on the D400 across the flat Dalaman plain, usually takes the tunnel at Göcek, and comes out on the slope above the Fethiye gulf. It runs through the outskirts of Fethiye without dropping down to the harbour, picks up the Ölüdeniz road and starts to climb south through pine forest, one bend after another. Ovacık is the first village on top; Hisarönü follows just beyond, where a side road heads west to the abandoned stone houses of Kayaköy. The slowest minutes come at the very end: a main street full of people on foot in the evening, and addresses tucked down lanes that were never laid out for cars.

• Book with the flight number, so that a plane coming in an hour behind schedule moves the pickup with it instead of leaving a driver waiting at the wrong time.
• Apartment complexes off the main street are hard to pick out in the dark, so send the full address or a map pin when you book rather than just the building's name.
• On a summer evening the strip fills with people walking, and the car may have to stop at the nearest corner instead of the door; a short walk with cases is easier when you expect it.
• If you also want a ride back to the airport at the end of the stay, it can be arranged in the same booking, which spares you sorting it out on the last night.
