An arrival is a flight to be met. Most Kalkan holidays begin here, because Dalaman is the airport the charters for this coast actually serve, and more of those flights land in the evening than in the morning. So the picture is a family coming through a small arrivals hall at half past ten at night, a trolley of cases, children who have stopped being reasonable, and a villa address up a lane no coach is going to attempt. Yacht crews joining a boat and owners coming out to open a house for the season take the same road, usually in daylight and with a shorter list of worries.

Out of the terminal you are in farmland immediately, and it stays flat for a quarter of an hour across the delta and its irrigated plots. Then the road climbs to the tunnel behind Göcek and drops to the water on the far side, where the bay at Fethiye opens up below with a string of lights round it. From there it is south-east, over the flat middle ground the Eşen comes down through, and into the last long series of bends. A hundred minutes for the 120 km, and the slowest part of them is the descent into Kalkan: a right turn off the D400, then a hillside of narrow lanes.

• Put the flight number in the booking instead of an expected hour: evening arrivals on this coast slip, and the number is the part that stays true.
• Arriving at night means the shops in Kalkan will be shut, so the shopping stop belongs in Fethiye, while the road still runs through it, and not after the climb.
• If you land in the evening the whole drive is in the dark and the bay you booked will not be visible until morning, so plan the first day as a slow one rather than a beach one.
• Kalkan's lanes are steep and some of them one-way, so the practical question is where a car can stop and turn; settle it with the villa owner before you fly rather than in the dark outside the gate.
