Dalyan is a small town strung along a river, and most of what brings people here sits on the water. Across from the quays, temple-fronted tombs are cut into the cliff above the reed beds; downstream, the river runs out to İztuzu, the long sand bar where loggerhead turtles come ashore to nest. Visitors stay in riverside pensions, small family hotels and villas set among the orange groves at the edge of town, many of them down lanes too narrow for a coach. So the usual arrival is a late flight into Dalaman, a tired group with luggage, and an address that only makes sense once you are standing in front of it.

The leg is 30 km and takes about 35 minutes. From the terminal the car joins the D400 and runs west across flat delta farmland to Ortaca, where it leaves the main road at the junction signposted for Dalyan and heads west towards the river. That turn is the hinge of the trip: after it a divided road, two lanes each way, runs between citrus orchards and pomegranate plots, with the hills of the far bank ahead. Then comes the town itself, its main street, the riverfront, and the side lanes where pension signs are small and house numbers are easy to miss. Most of the drive is open road; the final few minutes are the careful part.

• Book with the flight number rather than a landing time, because evening arrivals at Dalaman often slip and the number is what the pickup is matched to.
• Ask your host for a map pin as well as the street address, since several Dalyan pensions sit down unnamed lanes off the river and a pin saves circling the town in the dark.
• İztuzu is closed to visitors at night during the turtle nesting season, so after a late landing the beach is a plan for the next day, by road or by river boat from town.
• If you need a return pickup for your departure or want the driver to wait while you collect villa keys, mention it when booking so it can be arranged.
