Göcek is where the boats are, and almost everyone who books this leg is heading for one. A gulet chartered for a week among the islands of the bay, a bareboat yacht picked up from a charter base, a crew member flying in to relieve someone on board, an owner coming out to look at a hull that wintered here: the destination is a pontoon, not a reception desk. That changes the luggage too. A week afloat means soft bags, snorkelling kit, perhaps a box of provisions, and boarding at a time the charter company sets rather than at a hotel's check-in hour. The thing to get right is reaching that boat at the correct quay without standing on the jetty for half a day.

The distance is short: 25 km, about 30 minutes from the terminal. The first stretch leaves the airport road for the D400 and runs east across the flat farmland around Dalaman. Then the hills close in and the road goes straight through the ridge in the Göcek tunnel, a little under a kilometre long and now with two tubes, where the old road once carried all the traffic over the top. On the far side it drops towards the bay, and a turn off the highway takes you down between pine slopes into the village and to the waterfront. The quays are spread along that shore, so the last few hundred metres matter more than anything before them.

• Give the boat's name, the marina and, if you have it, the pontoon or berth number, because Göcek has several marinas and a town quay, and "the marina" could mean any of them.
• Charter companies often set boarding hours after an early flight lands; if that gap is long, say so when booking, since waiting time or a stop in the village can be arranged then.
• Count every bag when you book, including dive gear, a guitar or boxes of provisions, so the vehicle is sized for a week on board rather than a weekend away.
• On the way back, charter boats are normally cleared in the morning, so match the airport pickup to your flight and to the hour the crew want the boat empty, whichever comes first.
