Kaş lives off dive boats and yacht charters, and the airport its visitors fly home from is Dalaman. The bookings are end-of-holiday: a fortnight of Kekova day boats and dive schools running up against a fixed check-in hour, a charter crew flying home, a course completed and the certificate in the bag. Kit matters here in a way it does not on other legs — cylinders, regulators, fins, a folding kayak — and a boot that swallows all of it counts for more than a spare seat. Divers also have to arrange the last day so that enough time is left between the final dive and take-off.

Kaş sits in a bowl below the road, so the journey begins by climbing out of it before turning inland over the Bezirgan plateau: upland fields ringed by mountains, cooler than the harbour and thinly populated. The Kalkan turning comes and goes, the road drops to the open valley floor, and Fethiye arrives with about forty kilometres left and the hard part behind. The bore under the mountain at Göcek and the flat crossing of the plain are then the fastest kilometres of the day. Two hours five for 150 km, and the arithmetic is front-loaded: the first hour covers less ground than the last.

• Leave the recommended interval between the last dive and take-off — it is the flight that decides which day the diving stops, not the transfer.
• Dive kit and a fortnight's cases rarely fit the same vehicle, so the number of bags belongs in the booking and not in a conversation on the pavement.
• If you are staying out on the Çukurbağ peninsula, add the peninsula road to the journey: it is a dead end and getting off it takes its own quarter of an hour.
• Dalaman's single terminal means departures and arrivals share one small hall, so the queue you meet at check-in depends less on the hour than on how many flights go out in the same slot.
