Nearly everyone who flies in for Kaş lands here, and the drive is the price of a town with no runway near it. Those travelling are divers whose bags weigh more than their clothes, walkers starting a section of the Lycian Way, and couples who chose Kaş precisely because it is a working harbour town rather than a hotel strip: a Hellenistic theatre above the water, Meis, the Greek island you can pick out from the quay, boats that run out over the sunken city at Kekova. Some already have a dive booked for the next morning; others have no plan beyond finding their apartment in the lanes.

The two hours run in the opposite order to the one you would expect, because the easy ground comes first. Out of the terminal it is flat farmland, then the tunnel beneath the ridge at Göcek takes you through to the coast, and Fethiye comes up some forty kilometres in: 110 still to go, and most of the work with them. Beyond it the road settles onto the floor of the Eşen, then begins to climb, gains the Bezirgan tableland and crosses it, passes the Kalkan turn and enters the long descent that ends in hairpins down into Kaş. 150 km, two hours and five minutes.

• Dalaman is a seasonal airport: in winter the flight list is short and the connections few, which matters if you are weighing it against Antalya for a trip outside the season.
• There is no railway, and the bus version means a change at Fethiye with everything you brought, which is why these 150 km are usually done in one vehicle rather than by sorting the last leg out on arrival.
• The last twenty minutes are hairpins down into the town, so anything for travel sickness wants to be in a pocket rather than in the hold luggage.
• If a boat day to Kekova is already booked, do not set it for the first morning after a night arrival: those boats leave the harbour early and the drive will already have taken a piece out of the night.
