Fethiye is one of the main places Dalaman arrivals are heading for, and the people on this leg are a mixed lot: holidaymakers bound for a hotel on Çalış beach, families who have rented a flat in town for a fortnight, residents who live here year-round and are flying home after weeks away, luggage and all, and crews or guests about to board a boat in the harbour. What they share is a destination that sounds like one place and is not. The town itself wraps round the southern shore of its bay, with the harbour, the waterfront promenade and the old quarter beneath the rock tombs. Çalış is a long beach of its own on the opposite shore, looking west across the water.

Beyond it the way runs through wooded valleys and small villages before coming down to the flat ground at the head of Fethiye bay. 50 km, about 50 minutes, a little longer in July traffic. The address settles the final stretch: for Çalış the car takes the first turn signed for the beach and keeps out of the centre, while for the town and the harbour it stays on the main road.

• Write the neighbourhood into the booking rather than just Fethiye, because Çalış, the harbour front and Karagözler are reached by different roads at the end of the drive.
• Give the flight number instead of a landing time, so that if the plane into Dalaman runs late the pickup moves with it.
• If you are joining a gulet or a yacht in the harbour, send the boat's name and the quay with the booking, as the moorings run the whole length of the waterfront.
