Going the other way, the car is usually loaded at a small guesthouse in Pamukkale village or at one of the thermal hotels in Karahayıt, the morning on the terraces already done. Some passengers are heading for a flight out of Antalya that evening; others are starting the beach half of the holiday and want to be at a hotel reception by the afternoon. A third group never came from the coast at all: they reached Denizli from the Aegean side or off a long-distance coach, and a car down to Lara or Konyaaltı beats waiting for another bus and changing again at the far end.

Southbound the same 250 km take about 3 hours 20 minutes, and the day runs backwards: you leave high, cool and dry, and arrive in coastal humidity. Denizli goes by first, then the plateau widens — the pale pans of Acıgöl, ploughland and stubble, the water of Burdur lake on the other side this time. At Bucak the D650 begins giving the height back, and on that descent towards the coast it is the lorries that set the pace. The sea appears late, in the last twenty minutes, and the slow part is no longer the pass but Antalya's ring road at the end of the working day.

• If a flight out of Antalya is the point of the journey, give the terminal and the departure time when you book, so the start is calculated from the plateau rather than guessed at in the village.
• Pamukkale village lanes are narrow and the guesthouses small, so name the building and the driver will meet you at the address you give instead of at a junction with the main road.
• The natural break falls between Acıgöl and Burdur, roughly halfway, and it is the last comfortable hour to stop before the descent starts.
• If you swam in the antique pool, keep the wet things in a bag within reach rather than in the boot: the air stays cool for another two hours and then suddenly does not.
