From Alanya this is a long day by any measure, and the people who book it know that: nearly five hours out, the same back, and a departure while the harbour is still dark. Some are in their second or third week and have run out of coast to look at; others live here for part of the year, in Mahmutlar or Kestel, and pick a quiet weekday in spring or autumn for the trip. The tour buses that leave Alanya for the terraces start earlier still, and their middle hours go where the itinerary says rather than where the group would have chosen — the usual reason a family books a car of its own instead.

370 km and about 4 hours 50 minutes, split into two halves that look nothing alike. The first is the D400 west with the sea on your right: Konaklı, Avsallar, the pine headlands above İncekum, Okurcalar, then Manavgat, Side and Belek — two hours of resort road before Antalya. The inland half begins where the coast road ends: the D650 tips the car up onto the plateau, and the next two hours are ploughed fields, the lake at Burdur, the salt flats of Acıgöl and finally Denizli. At this length the sensible version of the trip has a night at the other end rather than an immediate turn round.

• Done in one day this run leaves in the dark and comes back after dark, so settle the pickup time when you book and keep the rest of that day and the next morning free.
• Addresses at the eastern end — Mahmutlar, Kargıcak, Kestel — add twenty minutes before the car has even reached the centre of Alanya.
• Ask for two stops rather than one: at nearly five hours the coastal half wants a break of its own and so does the plateau.
• The antique pool is not a spa but a swim among fallen columns, so swimwear and a towel are worth the space even on a day when nobody planned to swim.
