This is the residents' ride. Mahmutlar has supermarkets and a market day of its own, but everything that needs a counter or an office is in Alanya: the state hospital and the private clinics, the land registry, the migration desk that issues residence permits, the tax office, the notary. Add the crowd for the big weekly market, the bank errands that still have to be done in person, and the evenings — the harbour, the restaurants under the castle, the boats. People who live in Mahmutlar go into Alanya the way people anywhere go into town, and usually before nine in the morning.

Twelve kilometres west, about 20 minutes, and the morning version of this road is not the evening one. Out of Mahmutlar's main street, through Kestel with the mountain wall on one side and the sea on the other, over the Dim at Tosmur, then into the eastern edge of Alanya where the traffic arrives all at once. The castle rock stands ahead of you the whole way, which makes the distance look shorter than it drives. The slow part is the last two kilometres: the centre has pedestrian streets, one-way loops and a harbour road that fills, so the drop-off is often a street back from the door.

• Allow more than twenty minutes for anything with a fixed appointment time, because the last two kilometres into the centre are where the morning collects.
• The centre works as a one-way loop around the harbour road, so being set down a street from the door is normal and usually quicker than circling to it.
• On market mornings the streets closest to the stalls are effectively shut to cars, so count on the last few hundred metres being on foot.
• Out of season these twelve kilometres are quiet; from June the Tosmur turning fills with day traffic heading up the Dim valley to the river restaurants, and that is where the eastern approach backs up.
