Leaving is the one moment when the hotel's sea-side position works against you. The car comes out onto the eastbound carriageway, pointing towards Alanya, and has to turn at the next junction or turning point before it can head west. In the centre of Konaklı, with buses pulling in and vans unloading outside the shops, those few hundred metres take a little longer by day than they look. After that the route is simply the D400 in reverse — Türkler, Avsallar, Okurcalar, Manavgat — 113 km and about 95 minutes.

Set the pickup when you book, working back from the flight: the drive itself, the airline's check-in time and a cushion for Manavgat if you set off after mid-morning. The car pulls up at the hotel entrance on İskele Sokak, so be down in the lobby with the bags at the agreed time rather than waiting upstairs. On an early departure the village is still asleep, the turning point is clear and the road runs at its easiest.

• If your flight home leaves from Gazipaşa–Alanya instead, say so when booking: that airport lies east, past Alanya, and it is a separate transfer.
• With an evening flight, time the car by the departure board rather than by check-out, and leave the bags with reception in between.
• Write İskele Sokak 3, Konaklı on the return booking as well, because before dawn the side streets of central Konaklı are hard to tell apart.
