Heading for the airport, the first part is the slowest: back west through Alanya, where the main road crosses the town before the coast opens out towards Konaklı. In the early hours this costs little; once the town is awake, buses, deliveries and junctions can stretch it noticeably. After that it is the D400 through Türkler, Avsallar, Okurcalar, Manavgat and Serik, and in normal conditions the 110 minutes for 132 km are a fair estimate, with the crossing of Alanya as the part that changes from day to day.

Because the beach is on the far side of the road and reached by the tunnel, the car waits at the hotel's street entrance, never down by the sea, so be at the front with the luggage when the time comes. Early flights from Antalya mean a start from Tosmur well before breakfast; ask reception the night before about settling the bill and handing in keys, and whether something can be packed for the road. Tell us too if anyone needs extra room, for a wheelchair, a pushchair or golf bags, since the vehicle is chosen at booking.

• Allow for the town crossing when you fix the hour: 110 minutes of road plus your airline's check-in window, with a little more in July and August.
• If you fit in a last swim, remember the car stops at the street entrance, not at the beach end of the tunnel, and leave time to change.
• Whatever Alanya's traffic does that morning, the fare agreed at booking is for the car, not for the clock.
