Two hours of road, and a hill to come down before any of it starts. That is the shape of the last morning here, and it is why the pickup time looks earlier than people expect: the car has to climb the lane from the D400 to whichever part of the complex you are in, turn, load and come back down before a single one of the hundred and forty-five kilometres is behind it. Give the hill ten minutes of its own. With a five o'clock flight that puts the whole household in the lobby before two, which is better known in advance than discovered.

The descent is short and steep and taken carefully with a loaded boot, particularly after rain. At the bottom the car turns west and the rest is simply the coast: Mahmutlar, the length of Alanya with its lights and its promenade, the castle rock, then open road through Avsallar and Okurcalar to Manavgat. Leaving in the dark you have all of it to yourself; leaving at eight you share Alanya with everyone going to work, and that is the difference between a hundred and twenty minutes and something nearer a hundred and forty.

• The lane is steep enough that a loaded minibus takes it slowly in both directions, so build the hill into the time rather than adding it afterwards.
• Gazipaşa is about thirty-five kilometres away against Antalya's hundred and forty-five, so a return booked to the wrong airport is not a detour but a different journey altogether.
• In wet weather it is the hill and not the highway that wants allowing for, so a winter departure is worth setting ten minutes earlier than the same flight in July.
