On departure day the car comes to the hotel on the seafront boulevard at the hour fixed when you booked. Heading for Antalya means going west, and from Cumhuriyet that means crossing the whole of Alanya first: back up to the D400, past the centre, through the lights and out along the western beaches. Before dawn this takes a few minutes. Late in the morning, with buses, delivery vans and shoppers, it can be the slowest stretch of the whole trip, so allow for it when you choose the pickup time rather than assuming the 110 minutes are all highway.

Look at the departure airport on your ticket, not only the time. Some flights home leave from Gazipaşa, which lies east of Alanya and is much closer to this part of town, while Antalya is 130 km back to the west. The two trips point in opposite directions from the hotel door, and a car booked for the wrong one cannot be put right at the kerb. Give the flight number with the booking; it lets the airport and the hour be checked against the pickup before the morning comes.

• With a midday pickup, add a margin for the crossing of central Alanya; with a pre-dawn one, the town is empty and the time is on the highway.
• Rooms are normally wanted back before the afternoon, so ask reception the evening before whether cases can stay at the desk until the car arrives.
• The beach and the jetties are where sunglasses and towels get left behind; walk down once more before you check out.
