Rooms are to be vacated by noon, and because the drive back is short, it is tempting to leave late. Keep the spare time for the airport instead, where in summer the queues at bag drop and passport control decide whether a departure feels calm or rushed. Start from the moment you want to be inside the terminal, subtract the 45 minutes of road, then subtract another quarter of an hour for the walk from the room, the key at reception and the cases going into the boot. What remains is the pickup time to book.

On the way out the car turns right through the gate, runs north along Atatürk Caddesi for about 700 metres and rejoins the D400 at the junction it came in by. From there it is the cliff road in reverse, through the three tunnels and down to Konyaaltı, at much the same pace whatever the hour. The variable part is the city: the D400 crosses the north of Antalya together with commuter and delivery traffic, and on a weekday evening that is where the time goes. Leave before seven in the morning and that stretch is nearly deserted, so the full 46 km go by quickly.

• Atatürk Caddesi is a two-lane village street, so the car pulls in at the entrance rather than waiting on the road; come down to the lobby a few minutes before the agreed time.
