From Tosmur, the entire town stands between you and the road west. The car climbs back to the D400 and must cross Alanya end to end, past Oba, Keykubat beach and the castle peninsula, before the coast opens out towards Konaklı. At midday or on a summer evening that crossing, with its signals, buses and pedestrians at every junction, accounts for most of the delay on a 132 km journey; in the small hours it moves freely, and the 110 minutes are realistic when the pickup comes before the town wakes up.

The beach is the other thing to plan around. A final morning on the sand in front of the hotel means a shower, damp swimwear packed into the case and the room key handed back, all before the car pulls up, and rooms are normally wanted back around midday. With an afternoon flight, ask at reception the evening before whether your luggage can be stored while you spend the last hours by the water, and tell us the time you will be standing at the entrance, ready, rather than the time you plan to leave the sea.

• Write Club Bayar Beach Hotel and Tosmur on the return booking too: Bayar Resort in Konaklı is at the western end of Alanya, and a mix-up would send the car to the wrong side of town.
• Plan backwards from departure: 110 minutes of road, your airline's check-in window, and a further allowance in July and August for getting through Alanya.
