On the way out, the part of the road that decides the timing is in the middle, not at either end. From the gate the car goes back up past the village to the traffic lights on the D400; the dozen kilometres to Manavgat are dual carriageway broken by more lights at village junctions, and at the town itself the lights on both sides and the river crossing collect the local morning traffic. A pickup at four or five in the morning meets none of it and stays close to the 70 minutes; a mid-morning departure in high summer can lose real time on that stretch.

Before agreeing an hour, check the airport printed on the ticket. Antalya is 81 km west of the gate; Gazipaşa, on the far side of Alanya, is about ninety kilometres east. The two runs are of much the same length but set off in opposite directions, so a car arranged for one is no use for the other, and the slip is easy to make when a holiday has been sold as Side or Alanya rather than by airport. For Antalya, give the terminal as much thought as the road: in July and August bag drop and security can take as long as the drive itself.

• If your room is in one of the club houses, set off for the entrance with the cases a few minutes before the car is due, so the walk through the gardens does not eat into the margin.
• Settle any extras on the evening before an early departure, so that checking out at dawn is a matter of handing over the key.
• If the airline moves your flight, tell us as soon as you hear; the car is booked for a time, and a time is far easier to change the day before than at the gate.
