Heading home, the slow part comes first. Before the car reaches open road it has to cross the whole of Alanya from east to west: out of Tosmur onto the D400's eastern bypass, west along Keykubat Bulvarı behind the town beach, then Zamanoğlu Caddesi to the western edge of town, where the road finally leaves the built-up area. At five in the morning that is quick work; from mid-morning, with buses, delivery vans and a signal at every crossing, it takes noticeably longer. After that the coast road runs back through Konaklı, Avsallar and Manavgat, and the 132 km and 110 minutes are counted from this door to the terminal.

A residential street in Tosmur is not a resort forecourt, so the car stops at the kerb on 6. Sokak and the cases are loaded there. Have everything down in the lobby at the agreed hour; the driver will lift the bags, but a side street is no place for a car to stand for long. If members of one party are flying at different times, a separate car for each departure works better than one car looping back through Alanya a second time.

• Set the pickup by counting back from the flight: 110 minutes on the road, then whatever check-in time your airline asks for on an international departure.
• For a daytime pickup, build in a margin for crossing Alanya itself; the delays gather on the town boulevard, not on the open highway.
• Ask for a child seat on the homeward leg as well if you need one; it goes into the car before it sets off for Tosmur.
