Antalya Airport to Phaselis transfer

Phaselis lets you do two things in one stop. The ancient harbour city lies among pines on the Kemer coast, with three bays — north, city and south — and a paved main street running between two of them past baths, an agora and a Roman gate. The water at the edges is clear and shallow, so people swim straight off the old harbour shore, and Mount Tahtalı stands behind the whole scene. The car park is inside the site rather than out on the highway, so towels and a change of clothes never have to be carried far.

From the Kemer strip this is a 15 to 25 minute drive: Tekirova and Çamyuva nearest, Kemer 20 minutes, Göynük and Beldibi 25 to 30. Antalya and Lara about an hour. From Belek or Kadriye it is an hour and a half each way through Antalya, a full day not a morning; from Side nearer two hours each way — three or four hours in the car for a swim, which only adds up if the ruins are the point. From Alanya, forget it. A coach excursion leaves you a fixed hour; your own car takes the ruins early, the water at midday and the road home at five.

On the way in from the airport this is one of the few detours that genuinely works: 75 km, about 65 minutes, and the gate is barely off the road to every Kemer hotel, with the car parked inside the site beside your luggage. It only pays if the swimming things are near the top of the case. For a hotel in Belek, Side or Alanya it is entirely the wrong direction.

Visiting Phaselis

Which bay you settle on shapes the whole day. The middle one, at the old harbour, is where everybody gathers and where the swimming is strangest: a few metres out there are worked blocks lying on the bottom, so you are floating over masonry rather than sand. The southern one is the broad bay, its edge coarse pebble that rolls under the heel and burns bare feet by the end of the morning. The northern one is the quiet bay, furthest to walk to and usually the emptiest. The three sit a few minutes apart, and between them you walk on flat sand, pine needles and worn paving.

Two hours is enough to see the site properly: the street between the harbours, the gate at its end, the bath walls beside it and the small theatre set into the slope above, with time left to sit on a wall and look at the mountain behind all of it. With a towel that becomes four or five hours and nobody notices them going. The two visits want different weather as well: the stones are at their best in the first hours of the day, the water is warmest and smoothest well after noon, and that is the argument for doing both instead of choosing.

That makes this the one place in the group where the same destination is two different bookings. The two-hour version is a car that waits; the towel version is a drop-off with a pickup, and it should be booked that way from the start rather than created by five hours of waiting. Give the return hour some slack, because swimming has no natural finishing point. The rest of the day goes on eating more often than on anything else to see, so decide at the same time whether the car takes you up towards the Kemer road afterwards or straight back to the hotel.

  • For a short stop, walk the street from the gate to the harbour and leave the northern bay out: it is the same water a few hundred metres further on.
  • In the harbour bay you swim over cut blocks, so look down as well as ahead, and goggles do more here than on a sand beach.
  • Children usually end up in the middle bay, because you get into the water there off flat stone instead of over rolling pebble.
  • Keep the far end of the site for last: the walk between the bays is easy, but doing it twice in the middle of the day is what tires people.
