Checkout falls around midday and a great many flights home from here go in the evening, which leaves a gap of six or seven hours with the cases already downstairs. Fifteen kilometres is close enough that heading for the airport early is a poor way to spend it: you would be trading a beach for a bench. What guests at this end of the strip generally do is ask about a late checkout or a room for the day, then keep the car for the afternoon. Whether either can be had is the hotel's decision, so ask at the desk a day or two ahead.

When the car does come, this is the easy version of the journey. Lara Barut is the westernmost of the big gates, so there is no strip to drive down first: out of the gatehouse, a short run through Güzeloba and onto the airport road. The variable is the hour. Between five and seven the Güzeloba junctions are carrying the city home, and an evening flight that leaves the hotel at six sits in exactly that; the same fifteen kilometres at nine at night take the twenty minutes the map promises and nothing more.

• Fix the pickup once you know whether the room is yours until the afternoon — moving the hour a day ahead is simple, moving it on the morning is not.
• Evening is the busiest time on the departures level, so allow a few minutes for the car to work its way to the kerb.
• With small children, set the pickup by the flight rather than by checkout: the terminal is where the waiting happens, and it is a poor place to do it.
