Almost everything a stay in Kemer is built around happens outdoors: the beach, the boat trips from the marina, the cable car up Tahtalı, the canyon walks in the hills behind the hotels. That works until the weather turns, with a wet day in the cooler months or a July afternoon too hot to lie on the pebbles, and then the question is where to find a roof. The nearest big answer is Antalya Aquarium, on the Konyaaltı side of the city. Visitors follow themed tanks into a long walk-through tunnel where sharks and rays pass overhead, and the same complex holds a snow hall kept below freezing and a house of reptiles and insects. It is a visit of a couple of hours, not a whole day.

The drive is 40 km, about 40 minutes, and most of it is the coast road north. Past Göynük and Beldibi the D400 keeps to a shelf between the Beydağları and the sea, then comes down off the last headland beside the port on the city's western edge. That is what sets this leg apart from trips out of the eastern resorts: Konyaaltı is the first district you reach, so the car does not have to cross the centre. The open-air water park further along the same boulevard asks for swimwear, sunscreen and a full summer day; the aquarium asks for none of that, leaving room for the promenade behind the beach afterwards. The booking covers the ride out; a return pickup or waiting time can be added.

• On a wet morning, leave soon after breakfast: the rain falls on every resort along this coast at once, families everywhere reach for the same plan, and the tunnel is at its calmest early on.
• Because the visit runs to a couple of hours, letting the driver wait is often simpler than fixing a return time in advance, so ask for waiting time when you book.
• On a scorching day an afternoon visit fits best: the hottest hours spent indoors, then the promenade while the sun sinks behind the mountains, with the pickup set for after dusk.
• If you mean to stroll along the promenade afterwards, tell the driver which way you will walk, so the pickup can be fixed at the far end of the stroll, further along the boulevard, rather than back at the aquarium door.
