Going back up is a short journey with two moods. In the afternoon it is a hotel change in reverse: a few nights of bungalows and a shore with no sunbeds, then a room in Kemer with a pool and a lift, cases carried up the lane to wherever the car can turn. Late in the evening it is the same forty kilometres in the dark, with a family that walked up to the flames and came back down again. The valley also sends people up for ordinary things — a pharmacy, a cash machine, a proper supermarket, the boats that leave the marina.

As the clock sees it, half the journey is over in the first eight kilometres: the pull up out of the valley is narrow, slow and full of turns, and it uses as much time as the thirty-odd kilometres that follow. From Ulupınar the D400 drops back to the shore and turns north-east — Tekirova, the Phaselis turning, Çamyuva — and then the hotel gates begin and do not stop until the Kemer roundabouts. Forty minutes for 40 km on paper; in July the last few crawl behind hotel shuttles, and after dark the whole thing runs clean.

• Rooms in Kemer are usually ready in the early afternoon, which makes the middle of the day the natural hour for these forty minutes.
• Coming back from the flames at ten at night, the first twenty minutes are the unlit climb, so anyone hoping to sleep should do it after Ulupınar rather than before.
• A pharmacy or a cash machine is a Kemer errand rather than a valley one, and it is worth folding into this run instead of making a second trip.
• If a boat out of Kemer marina is the reason for coming up, count the forty minutes plus the walk along the quay, because the boats keep to their own hour and not to yours.
