Belek gives a family nearly everything inside the hotel gates, yet after a few days of pool, buffet and soft sand the children start asking what else there is. The aquarium at Konyaaltı is the outing that most often answers them. It is indoors throughout, which suits a rainy day as well as one too hot for the sunbeds, and its high point is a glass tunnel, 131 metres of it, with sharks and rays drifting overhead. Snow World, a hall of real snow kept below freezing, shares the complex. The beach is a short walk from the entrance, and that makes a full day of it: fish in the morning, then an afternoon on pebbles instead of Belek's sand, with mountains closing the bay to the west.

This is the long way across Antalya. Belek lies well east of Antalya and Konyaaltı on the city's western side, so the whole city sits in between: 50 km, about 50 minutes. The car follows the resort road west through Kadriye, turns north there to reach the D400 and runs west on it past the airport turning; from there the highway bends around the northern side of the city instead of entering the centre, and Dumlupınar Bulvarı then brings you back down towards the sea, with the aquarium standing on that same boulevard. The city section is the slow part at the morning and evening peaks. What you book is the outward drive; a return pickup at the end of the afternoon, or a car that waits, can be arranged at the same time.

• Give the children's ages when booking so that suitable child seats are fitted before you set off, because at fifty minutes each way they will spend more than an hour and a half in them.
• Pack swimwear, towels and a dry change of clothes for everyone, so that nobody sits through the long drive back to Belek in wet things after the sea.
• Konyaaltı beach runs for several kilometres, so if the afternoon is for swimming, set the return pickup near the stretch where you plan to spend it rather than at the aquarium door.
• The ring road round the north of the city fills up at the end of the working day, and a return timed before the evening rush or after it has passed keeps the drive close to its usual length.
