The return from Kargıcak to Antalya Airport is a long one, and its slowest stretch comes early: the D400 has to cross Alanya town before it opens out westwards. In the very early hours the town boulevard is usually quiet, while later in the day local traffic builds at its junctions, so a later pickup should allow for that. Overall the 143 km and the 115 minutes hold on most days, but this is a journey where an extra quarter of an hour in the plan costs nothing and absorbs a great deal.

With the coast road running right past the grounds, the car pulls in at the entrance rather than stopping on the highway itself, so be in the lobby at the agreed time with the luggage gathered. Breakfast on a very early departure is likely to be closed; ask the evening before whether a packed one can be prepared. With nearly two hours in the car, keep water, a jacket for the air conditioning and anything needed for children within reach rather than in the boot.

• If your return flight is from Gazipaşa rather than Antalya, say so clearly when booking; the two airports lie in opposite directions from here.
