On the way out the car first has to climb back from the shore to the D400 through the same residential streets, and in high season they can hold a delivery van or a coach collecting guests from the neighbouring hotels. Plan for it by being in the lobby a few minutes before the agreed hour with the bags already down from the room, especially if your room is in the second building and the cases have to come through the underpass first.

Once the car is on the highway, the 117 km back to Antalya Airport take about 100 minutes in ordinary traffic, westbound through Avsallar, Okurcalar and Manavgat. Summer afternoons are when the D400 is busiest, with transfer coaches heading for the evening departures, while a pre-dawn pickup has the road nearly to itself. The pickup time is agreed when you book and the driver comes at that hour; if the airline changes your flight, tell us early so the car moves with it.

• Tell us how many suitcases and pushchairs are coming, because the vehicle is matched to the luggage as much as to the number of travellers.
