Going home, the drive needs no manoeuvre at all. The car leaves the hotel straight onto the westbound lanes, already heading for Antalya, and within a minute or two it is passing through the centre of Avsallar, quiet before dawn and busy by mid-morning with minibuses and delivery vans. Then come the İncekum pines and the village of Okurcalar, before the highway reaches Manavgat and the long open run across the Serik plain.

That minibus stop by the hotel is worth keeping in mind on the last morning. Dolmuş drivers pull in at the roadside there, while the booked car comes up the hotel's own drive, so wait at reception with the cases rather than out at the bus stop, where a driver looking for a family with luggage could easily miss you. The return is the same 106 km and about 90 minutes as the arrival; count back from the time your airline wants you at the desk and give us that pickup hour.

• Fix the pickup from the flight time rather than from checkout: 90 minutes of road plus the check-in window your airline sets.
• For a pickup before first light, settle any extras at reception the evening before, so the last minutes at the desk are spent handing over keys and nothing else.
• Avsallar's centre is the first thing the car passes on the way out, so do any last shopping there on foot the evening before rather than asking for a stop on a morning when the terminal is waiting.
