Heading for the airport, the minutes that drag are spent inside the quarter, not on the highway. The streets of Side Mahallesi are narrow and, through the day, busy with delivery vans, rental scooters and holidaymakers crossing towards the west beach; before dawn they are clear and the car reaches the D400 within a few minutes. From the Side turn-off it is a straight run west past Serik, Belek and Aksu, and the 65 km to the terminal usually take the 60 minutes quoted unless summer traffic around Aksu thickens.

The pickup point is the hotel's own entrance on 611 Sokak, not the main Side road, and in the dark one lit doorway in these streets resembles the next, so the booking should carry the full hotel name exactly as written on your voucher. Holidaymakers here often check out with more than they arrived with, beach gear and a bottle or two from the Side shops among it, so count the luggage the evening before and let us know if it has grown.

• Work the pickup time back from your flight when you book: 60 minutes on the road plus the check-in time your airline asks for, which in high season is commonly around three hours for international departures.
