Forty minutes is the drive, not the whole departure. The club is spread across a large site, with a main building, a village section and bungalows, so from some rooms the walk to the entrance with cases takes a while, and checking out and loading the car add more. Then count back from the flight: the airline's check-in deadline, the security queue as it really runs in that month, the forty minutes of road and a margin on top. That sum, rather than the distance, sets the hour the car should be waiting.

Going home, the car retraces the arrival: back west on the coast road through Belek, up to the D400 at Kadriye and west past Aksu to the terminal. An early flight is no problem at the club's end, because reception is staffed around the clock and a pre-dawn check-out works like any other. Even so, clear anything at the desk the evening before, so that the morning holds nothing but the walk to the car.

• Turkey keeps the same clock all year round, so a pickup arranged from home before your own clocks change can end up an hour out; confirm it in local time.
• Golf bags count on the way home too: if a set was bought during the stay or another bag has joined the pile, update the return booking so that everything still fits.
