From a Belek hotel, the Land of Legends is less a day trip than a neighbour. The park sits at Kadriye, at the western end of the same resort strip, with a theme park and a water park on one site and, alongside them, a street of shops on a canal that only really comes alive after dark. Getting there takes less time than choosing which swimsuit goes in the bag, so the distance is never the real question. The evening is. Families who arrive in the morning tend to stay on for the show on the canal, and when it finishes the whole crowd heads for the exits together: damp towels over shoulders, and children who were racing about an hour earlier now asking to be carried.

From the lobby to the park it is 8 km, about 15 minutes. The driver brings the car to the door, goes out through the hotel barrier and follows the road that runs behind the beach resorts, between pine woods and golf courses, west to Kadriye. In the morning that is a short, quiet hop. The return is the part that needs planning. After the show, coaches, hotel shuttles and taxis all gather on the same approach road, and the first few hundred metres can take longer than the rest of the drive. Then comes the gate of your own hotel at night, where the guard at the barrier usually checks the car before letting it through.

• Fix the return pickup when you book the morning ride, and choose a meeting spot at the edge of the car park rather than right outside the main entrance, where the crowd is thickest after the show.
• Keep wet towels and swimwear in a separate bag for the boot and a dry top within reach for each child, since an evening by the canal feels cool after a whole day in the water.
• Give the full name of your hotel and say which entrance you use, so the late drop-off ends at the lobby and not at a side gate that is already shut for the night.
• If you only want the evening on the canal street, book the outbound ride for after dinner and the return for when the show ends; the rides can wait for another day.
