Antalya Airport to Perge transfer

Perge is the nearest of the great Roman cities to Antalya, on the edge of Aksu, and among the most fully excavated. You enter between two round Hellenistic towers onto a colonnaded street with the stone water channel still cut down its centre, flanked by baths, an agora and a stadium that has kept most of its vaulted substructure. Much of the statuary found here now fills the Antalya Museum, which makes the two a natural pair. The site is flat, wide and almost bare of shade, so the hour you choose matters more than the month.

For anyone staying in Antalya, Lara or Kundu this is the local ancient city: about 25 minutes, the shortest serious excursion on the coast. From Belek and Kadriye it is 20 to 25 minutes west, from Side or Kumköy around 45, from Kemer an hour and ten through the city. Alanya is close to two hours each way, so nobody drives from there for Perge alone — it belongs on the same day as Aspendos, half an hour east. A coach gives the site 45 minutes because the itinerary has to move on; in your own car you take two hours, or leave after forty minutes if the heat wins.

Perge is the one ancient city that genuinely fits an arrival or departure day: 12 km from Antalya Airport, about 20 minutes, with your driver waiting in the arrivals hall with a name sign and the site on the way to almost every hotel. Weigh the two kilometres of broken paving in full sun against a flight just landed — on a hot afternoon, a late-checkout day is usually the better slot.

Visiting Perge

The shape of the visit is a straight line, walked twice. Through the towers the colonnaded street runs away from you for several hundred metres, far enough that the people at the top of it look small, and everything worth stopping for hangs off that one axis: the baths on your left before you have properly started, the agora behind them, the stadium on the right with vaulted chambers you can walk into. Underfoot it is broken paving, cart ruts worn into the stone and loose grit between the slabs, none of it level. There is no loop, so the way out doubles the distance.

What nobody expects is how tiring flat ground can be. No gradient changes your rhythm and nothing interrupts the sun, and the only honest shade is inside the bath walls and under the stadium vaults, where people stand for a minute and then go on. An unhurried visit runs to two hours; ninety minutes gets you the street, the baths and the stadium if you give up the far end. Sitting down means sitting on a block of stone, so the pace you set in the first ten minutes decides how much you see. Only the early morning and the last two hours of daylight are kind.

The gate stands on the edge of farmland with nothing around it to be dropped at and nothing within walking distance, so this is a site the car simply waits out, parked at the entrance for as long as you take, with no fixed return hour to hurry for. Where the day changes shape is when you add the city museum afterwards: it brings the sculpture past you in the order you met the buildings, and it moves the second half of the day indoors and out of the light, which on a hot afternoon is the whole argument for doing the two together. Say at booking that the stop is in two parts.

  • With an hour, walk the main street to its far end first and pick up the baths and the agora on the way back — the far end is what most visitors miss.
  • The vaulted chambers under the stadium are the coolest place on the site and the only real refuge from the light.
  • Flat soles with some grip: the paving is rutted and loose, and the channel down the middle of the street catches people who are looking up at the columns.
  • There is no circuit and no second exit, so cover the far end while you still feel like walking.
