Leaving Selimiye is easiest while the town is asleep. Before dawn the seafront boulevards are empty and the car reaches the D400 at the Kumköy lights within minutes. From mid-morning the flow turns against you, because coaches and hire cars arrive for the day at the old town, and the same boulevards that were clear at five fill with buses hunting for the car park and visitors crossing between them. A midday flight therefore needs a little more slack at the hotel end than the distance alone would suggest.

Once on the highway the run back is 65 km westbound through Serik and Aksu, and the 60 minutes generally holds outside the August peak, with the airport approach and the drop-off kerb taking a few minutes of their own. In the dark, the nearness of Side Star Beach is the one thing to plan for: two entrances with nearly the same name stand about 200 metres apart, so the booking should read Side Star Park, Özal Caddesi, and the simplest place to wait is inside at reception rather than out on the pavement.

• Work the pickup time back from the departure: an hour on the road, then however long your airline wants you at the terminal, often around three hours for an international flight in summer.
• If a child seat was fitted for the arrival, request it again on the departure booking, because it goes into the car before the driver sets off for Selimiye.
• The fare belongs to the car and is fixed when you book, so a slow morning on the Selimiye boulevards costs minutes rather than money.
