Kaş is small on purpose: a diving and yachting town in a bowl of hills, a Hellenistic theatre above the harbour, the Greek island of Meis sitting across the water. A fortnight is more than it holds, so the second half of the holiday often moves up the coast to Fethiye — the gulet harbour, the Tuesday market, the rock tombs cut into the cliff above the town. The other bookings are departures of a sort: a flight out of Dalaman with a night in Fethiye first, or a chartered boat that leaves from Fethiye's quay rather than this one. Some of it is simply a market day and back.

A hundred and ten kilometres and an hour and thirty-five minutes, which only makes sense once you have driven it. The D400 climbs north-west out of the bowl Kaş sits in, passes the turning for Kalkan and keeps rising onto the Bezirgan plateau, where the sea goes out of sight for a while. A long descent past the ruins of Xanthos and the Patara turn-off brings you down to the flat Eşen plain and its greenhouses, and the last stretch runs into Fethiye. Two climbs, two descents and bends nearly all the way: the shape of the road sets the time here, not the traffic.

• Ninety-five minutes of climbing and descending is a long time for anyone who travels badly, so the front seat is worth asking for when you book.
• The ruins of Xanthos and the Patara turn-off are both on this road; if either is meant to be a stop, say so when booking rather than on the day.
• Say which part of Fethiye you are heading for — the centre, the hillside west of it and the beach to the north are three different last ten minutes.
• Market day fills the streets of the centre, and that is the morning when the car is most likely to stop a street or two short of the door.
