Kalkan is a village of villas with a handful of shops, and Fethiye is the town it borrows: the Tuesday market where a week of self-catering does its real shopping, the fish hall, a dentist or a hospital appointment, a bank that wants to see you in person. Others go for the water, because the gulets leave the harbour early for the gulf and its islands, or for an afternoon below the Lycian tombs that stand in rows in the rock face behind the town. And when a villa week ends, the same road carries the change of address: cases in the boot at ten, a new reception before lunch.

Nothing here starts on the flat. Kalkan is built down a slope above its own bay, so the first minutes are the climb from the lane up to the D400, and only then does the road turn north-west. Xanthos stands on its hill above the river, the Patara turning goes by, and the country opens into the Eşen plain: plastic-roofed greenhouses to the horizon, the river itself hidden behind the dunes. Then come the last hills before Fethiye. Eighty kilometres, about seventy minutes: the extra time is all in the gradient and the steering, not in the traffic.

• The Tuesday market is why most of these trips are booked for a morning, and it is worth fixing the hour back before you set off rather than afterwards.
• Name the destination inside the town rather than just Fethiye: the bazaar, the marina and the hospital are nowhere near each other.
• If shopping is the purpose of the trip, the constraint is the boot rather than the seats, so name at booking how many of you there are and what is coming back.
• Neither direction has a fast stretch, so a day out in Fethiye spends roughly two hours twenty on the road before anything else happens.
