On the way back, the hotel's distance from the airport shapes the whole morning. The lane up to the D400 takes a minute or two, but the real variable lies further west, where the highway becomes Manavgat's main street and crosses the river; from about eight o'clock buses, delivery vans and school runs slow every set of lights there. In the dark before dawn the town is empty and the 82 km pass in roughly the 70 minutes quoted. A mid-morning flight is the one that deserves the most margin, because the route runs through the middle of the town.

• Count back from your flight: seventy minutes of driving, the screening at the terminal entrance and your airline's check-in deadline; for an international departure in summer, that puts the pickup well over three hours before take-off.
• If you want a last swim from the hotel's beach before an afternoon flight, ask reception the evening before what can be arranged after check-out, and book the car for later accordingly.
• What you pay was agreed per car when you booked; the Manavgat traffic can only add minutes to the trip.
