Here the gap between checkout and an evening flight is easier than almost anywhere on this coast, because it can be spent on foot. The clock tower and the shops are about twenty-five minutes inland, the sand is at the door, and neither needs a car. What the hotel will do with your room or your bags after checkout is its own decision and worth asking at reception rather than assuming, but the afternoon itself does not have to be spent sitting on a suitcase in the lobby. Book the car for the end of that afternoon and treat the last day as a day.

The drive out is town first and highway second, the reverse of the way in, and that matters in July and August. Between about five and seven the streets down to the shore carry people walking to dinner, bicycles and delivery vans, and a car leaving then moves at their pace for the first kilometre or two. From the Belek turning the D400 takes over for the rest of the 37 km and behaves as it did on the way in. The 40 minutes only holds if that first part was allowed for.

• The pickup is a normal street frontage rather than a resort forecourt, so agree a point where the car can legally stop and wait there once the cases are down.
• A late-afternoon departure in high summer meets these streets at their busiest, so ask for the car a little earlier than the 40 minutes alone would suggest.
• Whether a room, a shower or a luggage store is available after checkout is the hotel's call and not ours: ask them, then book the car around the answer.
