A family departure is mostly a luggage question. Cases, a pushchair, inflatables and the week's shopping rarely fit into the space they arrived in, so give the final count, and the children's ages for the seats, when you book the return rather than on the morning itself. Then work the pickup time back from the hour your airline closes check-in: a margin for the terminal, about 40 minutes for the 38 km, and whatever it takes to get everyone from the room to the gate.

On the way out the slow part comes first. From the gate the car turns back west along the hotel road, past the resorts between here and the town of Belek, then heads north through Kadriye to the D400 and west past Aksu to the terminal. Early in the morning the hotel road is nearly empty; from mid-morning onwards you share it with the resorts' service traffic and with coaches bound for the same airport, which is why a daytime departure deserves a few spare minutes.

• Ask reception the evening before to let the gate know your pickup time, so the car is waved through without a search for your name.
• If a pet is travelling home with you, have it ready in its carrier at the gate when the car arrives; the hotel does not allow pets in the lobby or at reception.
• Whether there is breakfast before a dawn departure, or a packed one instead, is the hotel's decision; ask at reception the night before.
