Gündoğdu is the eastern end of the Side resort coast and the first of it you meet coming from Gazipaşa: open public sand between citrus groves and the sea, low hotels and apartment blocks set back behind a single beach road, and no centre to speak of. The shops, the bakery and the pharmacy line that road rather than a square, and the village simply thins out at both ends. To the west it stops at the Manavgat river: the mouth lies just along the shore, which is why Side and its ruins are a drive from here and not a walk on the sand.

The leg is 120 km and about 100 minutes, almost all of it highway. What is worth knowing is how it ends: coming from the east, the turning for Gündoğdu leaves the D400 while Manavgat is still ahead, so the car never enters the town. The last few minutes drop between greenhouses and citrus gardens to the shore road, which the driver then follows to your block. Manavgat itself — the banks, the market, the hospital — sits inland to the north-west, a short ride of its own rather than somewhere you pass on the way in.

• There is more than one Gündoğdu in Turkey, so put Gündoğdu, Manavgat on the booking along with the full hotel or apartment name.
• For a bank, a pharmacy or a proper market the nearest town is Manavgat, and it lies inland rather than along the beach road.
• The mouth of the Manavgat river is immediately west, so Side is reached by car and not on foot along the sand.
• If you are in an apartment rather than a hotel, say so when you book: drop-offs here are at named blocks on the shore road, with no reception desk to ask at.
