GZP is Alanya's own airport in everything but street address, and most of what lands there is heading into the town. Arriving from the east you meet a different Alanya from the one on the postcards: the castle rock appears side-on above the harbour with the Red Tower at its foot, the older streets climb the eastern flank, and only once you are round the headland does Kleopatra beach open to the west. The name is elastic as a destination, too — Tosmur and Oba on the eastern approach count as Alanya for almost every practical purpose.

Forty-five kilometres, about 45 minutes, and only the last ten can misbehave. The first thirty-five are somebody else's road: the cliff bends west of the airport, Kargıcak, the length of the Mahmutlar high street, the Dim bridge. Then the coast road becomes a town road: on a July evening the stretch near the harbour is slow and the one-way system does the rest. After midnight, when much of the seasonal traffic arrives, the same 45 km run clean and the drive feels shorter than the figure suggests.

• Give the street and a landmark rather than the district alone: the centre is compact but heavily one-way, and 'Alanya' covers everything from Tosmur to the far end of Kleopatra beach.
• Hotels west of the headland sit on the far side of the centre, so add time in high season for the last three kilometres through town.
• If you are staying on the castle rock itself or in the lanes above the harbour, say so: the last few hundred metres are steep and narrow, and a larger vehicle may have to stop short of the door.
• From GZP this is about 45 minutes; the same hotel from Antalya Airport is close to two hours, so the airport code on your ticket matters more than any other detail on arrival day.
