The departure starts by reversing the last stretch: the straight four kilometres up from the shore to the Gündoğdu lights, where the car turns left onto the D400 and heads west. At an early hour there is little on the shore road, and the lights at the highway are the one place the car is likely to stop. Then come the Köprüçay bridge, Serik and Aksu, and on an ordinary morning the 58 km take close to the 55 minutes they took on the way in. Summer changeover days, when coaches leave the whole strip at once, are slower at that junction.

Because the hotel stands west of Side rather than in it, the airport is nearer than it is for most addresses on the Side coast, so the pickup hour can sit a little later than the one friends staying in Side or Manavgat may be given. Work it out backwards from the departure time, add the window your airline sets for check-in, and put it in the booking instead of leaving it to the last evening. Families leaving a beach hotel should also send the final count of cases and buggies, which is often not the same as the count that arrived.

• If your travel papers still show the hotel's previous name, give the new one as well when booking the departure, so the car is sent to Gündoğdu and not to Kemer.
• Child seats for the return trip are fitted before the car sets off, so ask for them on this leg too, not only on the arrival.
• Be at the main entrance a few minutes before the agreed hour with the cases already brought down from the room; the car is planned around that time.
